Vicky Wilson

Vicky Wilson is an artist and creative practitioner living and working on the Isle of Wight. She creates minimal compositions and uses bold colours to convey complex emotions to a wide audience. Primarily working in a digital medium, the #wipinthewindow residency at Department provided the space for her to explore installation, animation and projection.

Vicky Wilson said that the window residency was a great opportunity and a bit of a personal challenge. Working in such a public way is something she had never done before. Vicky’s work centres on emotion, feelings, memories and creative interpretations of situations, people, places and the past. She always seeks to draw what is felt or inferred not what is seen. Vicky work’s digitally but in the last year experimented with paint on canvas, clay and concrete castings. She also has experience with installation and audio/video work.

During her time in the window, Vicky wanted to identify a local story, historical situation or person of interest linked with Ryde and use it as the theme for the work she created.

There were two avenues Vicky wanted to explore in the window:

NFTs (Non Fungible Tokens)

She was about to launch her first collection of NFTs on opensea.io and shared information about NFTs, smart contracts and blockchain technology so young digital and non-digital artists can understand how to create and sell artwork on this platform.

She did this in the window space by working on a laptop facing the street creating digital compositions. Her laptop was connected to a large TV, which mirrored her laptop screen. People outside were able to see what she was doing on a large scale.

Installation

Vicky is also interested in the juxtaposition of traditional and modern art. She wanted to take her compositions a step further and place them into a 3D space. Before going in to the window, Vicky, envisioned creating a wooden structure made from flat panels, paint figures/compositions onto them and experiment by including her digital drawings, creating an installation.
